Have You Heard of Chalk Paint?

Have you all heard about chalk paint?

Not to be confused with chalkboard paint.

I hadn't heard about it until I went to Haven. When they first started introducing it, I thought they were talking about chalkboard paint, so I was a little confused when everyone was so excited about it. Chalkboard paint isn't really a new idea. It took me a second to make the distinction that they were discussing chalk (no board!) paint.

Chalk paint is a special paint that has a nice smooth, "chalky" texture. And the great part about it is that you don't need to do any prepping before using it. No sanding. No priming.

Hallelujah! Right?

The bad part about it is that it's expensive.

Today I was perusing some of my favorite blogs and saw that Jamielyn at I {heart} Nap Time found a way to make her own chalk paint. It looks pretty darn easy too-- and totally not expensive.

She shares the recipe and a tutorial in her post here.

You really should go to her blog and check it out!

  2. It was nice meeting you at Haven. Hope the drive home wasn't too bad.

I've made my own chalk paint too...you should try it. Did you try the little jar of Annie Sloan?

  3. So glad you got to see and try the Chalk Paint™ at Haven. When trying to make your own however, remember you are starting with latex, which isn't in Chalk Paint™, so already you are at a disadvantage. As Annie says, "Chalk is found in many products. It is not the chalk that makes the difference. Flour is found in both bagels and cake, but there is a big difference in the finished product. It is the RECIPE that counts" Annie's recipe is 22 years tested, and as some bloggers have done is to test to see how far it goes....10 pieces of furniture, one day, one can is one post. Perfectly Imperfect also posted some time ago about how many pieces of furniture she got done with one can of paint! Very economical in the long run! And....the homemade version of Chalk Paint™ (which is a trademark name) hardens up quickly in the can or container...better paint fast!

  4. Actually, the term chalk paint is not trademarked. That would be like saying latex paint is trademarked, or oil paint, or milk paint, or Dogfood.
I think that table is lovely and home made chalk paint certainly has a place in the world. Some people need to do things on a shoestring and don't mind experimenting. Sometimes, we learn what not to do during those experiments. I think there are two kinds of people, those who prefer to "mix it up right there in the sink" and those who want the convenience and assurance of using a product that has been produced and tested by professionals who have been in the industry for many years. I used to be in the first category - so I respect that group, but now, I'm in the latter catergory and will be launching my line of van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection very soon! I know that the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is a quality product, but it's nice for the consumer to know that there are always choices...THAT IS THE AMERICAN WAY! Yay! Kathy van Gogh

I had a ball at Haven. It was wonderful meeting such inspiring people in such a short amount of time.

  6. The drive wasn't too bad-- long but uneventful, which is always a blessing. :)

I do intend to try to make my own chalk paint. I think it's a great medium and have a few pieces that I'm thinking might be perfect opportunities to try it out.

I haven't been able to try the little jar of Annie Sloan yet, but I certainly will soon!

  7. I definitely appreciate the quality of Annie Sloan chalk paint. I have great respect for her time-tested product. I'm looking forward to working more closely with the sample that we were given at Haven!

I will also be trying out the diy version. It's just in my personality to "do it myself" as much as I can with my projects.

Since I'll be trying out both, I'll definitely let people know my results in all these projects!

  8. Thank you for your comment. I definitely appreciate your point of view. I'm in the shoestring stage you described for sure. :)

I feel that there are many instances where there is some risk in "doing it yourself". There are so many quality products to choose from these days. And there are occasions where it is most appropriate to use these time-tested products instead of going out on your own. However, I agree that there's a time and a place for both approaches. My point of view is more of the "mix it up right there in the sink" for budget reason-- but also because I think it's fun!

    1. I think that trademark app is for that style of the printed term chalk paint- in other words no one can copy that font and write chalk paint if they're not Annie Sloan. I can't imagine anyone being assigned a trademark just for the term chalk paint. It's been around for way too long...
