Gold Leaf Heart

I'm extremely excited about this project. It's simple, beautiful, and gold! I know that gold leaf has been trendy, but I'm not ashamed to jump on that trend bandwagon. I'm smitten with gold.

My house has seemed pretty colorless recently and I don't have much in the way of Valentine's Day decor, so that's why I chose to create this bright wooden heart that is accented by gold leaf.

It's easy peasy to make.

You'll need:

  • wooden heart
  • paint
  • gold leaf kit (gold leaf sheets and adhesive)

Josh cut the heart out of wood that we had on hand for my shape, but you can find wooden hearts at most craft stores. You can also use letters instead of shapes too. I considered an "x" and an "o" at first. I still might make letters as well because I like how this heart turned out.

The first step I didn't photograph and that is simply to paint the heart. I used Krylon's Cherry Red, but use any color that you like. Make sure the paint dries completely before applying the gold leaf.

Next, apply the gold leaf adhesive. Follow the instructions that were included with the gold leaf sheets. For mine, I applied the adhesive with an inexpensive foam brush in a random, blotchy pattern. I wanted an imperfect, abstract look. If you wanted perfect lines, you could use painter's tape to create nice crisp lines.

Most adhesives need time before applying the gold leaf sheets. I let mine sit for about 30 minutes until the adhesive was tacky as per the instructions.

After waiting for a half hour, it was time to apply the gold leaf. Again, since I wanted an abstract look, I tore the sheets into smaller pieces and applied them in the areas where there was adhesive. The sheets are very delicate, so if you want a perfect smooth look than you will need to be extremely careful and patient.

After all the areas have been covered with gold leaf, brush off the excess with a soft brush. If there are areas that need more gold leaf, you can go back and apply more adhesive and gold leaf.

My gold leaf kit came with a sealer, but since the heart will not be getting much wear and tear, I chose not to apply it.

And that's it!

I'm still moving it around the house to see where I like it best. Wherever it lands, it will definitely add a pop of cheery color.
